Mr Gedge's Geography Channel

Geography is the study of Earth's landscapes, peoples, places and environments. Subjects covered range from physical geography to human geography as well as field skills and methods of recording geographic data. Geography teacher Darron Gedge prefers to film actual geographic phenomena on location rather than just talk about it in front of a white board, as too many school textbooks are too theoretical for students to really get a true understanding. Footage for these videos have been taken in New Zealand, Asia, Canada and Australia.

How to tell a Grey Duck apart from a Mallard
Просмотров 6286 месяцев назад
The New Zealand grey duck population is believed to be extensively hybridised with introduced mallards to such an extent that few pure grey ducks may now exist, hence its “nationally vulnerable” conservation status. The Grey Duck is also native to Australia where it is known as the Pacific Black Duck. Grey ducks are easily confused with female Mallard from which they can be distinguished by: ma...
Human Impacts on the Great Barrier Reef
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.Год назад
Coral reefs around the world are considered to be an ecosystem at risk. In this video, Geography teacher Darron Gedge outlines some of the main threats facing Australia's world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef. Both natural stresses and human modifications have contributed to threatening the reef. Rising ocean temperatures, pollution and coastal development are included in some of the threats...
Where are Tropical Rainforests located?
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.Год назад
A tropical rainforest is a dense forest that is located in the tropics. That is the regions around the equator between the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn. Tropical rainforests cover about 6-7% of the Earth’s land surface. Some of the most well-known tropical rainforests are located in South and Central America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. In this video, Geography teacher Darron Ge...

A coral reef is a colony of hundreds of thousands individual animals called coral polyps. This geography video, outlines the factors that influence the location of the world’s Coral Reefs. The spatial distribution of coral reefs is heavily influenced by latitude, location, and altitude. The salinity and turbidity of water is also a big factor. The case studies used in this video include Austral...
Calculating Local Relief
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.Год назад
Local relief is the difference in height between two points over a relatively small area. To calculate the local relief, you have to first identify the highest and lowest elevations between the starting and the end point. To calculate local relief, we use the simple formula of highest point minus lowest point equals local relief. Photos and Video footage taken at Whitfield Conservation Park, Ca...
Calculating Gradient

How to Calculate the Vertical Exaggeration of a Cross Section
Просмотров 54 тыс.2 года назад
On Cross Sections graphs the horizontal scale is taken from the scale of the topographic map that it was drawn from. However, when we draw a Cross Section Graph the vertical scale is usually exaggerated relative to the horizontal scale. This is because if both axes were done to the same scale, the vertical scale on the y axis would appear almost flat. To calculate the vertical exaggeration of a...
How to Read an Area Reference
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.2 года назад
Sometimes people need to find a general area, rather than a specific point on a map. An area reference will allow you find a general location in a grid square. Area references comprise four-figure numbers. Topographic maps have a grid of lines drawn on them. You can see the lines, some horizontal, some vertical, and each line has a number corresponding to it. Now coming to a more simple map you...

Landforms made by Glacial Erosion
Просмотров 37 тыс.3 года назад
This video is part four of a four part series. Glacial erosion carves out a variety of landforms. Even in regions where there are no glaciers, many landforms are evidence they once existed there. The South Island has hundreds of fiords, ribbon lakes and U shaped valleys that exist as reminders of the giant glaciers that were once there. A Corrie, also known as a Cirque is an erosion feature for...
Landforms made by Glacial Deposition
Просмотров 28 тыс.3 года назад
This video is part three of a four part series. As glaciers reach lower altitudes, temperatures rise and ice begins to melt. As this happens the ice cannot carry as much material so this is deposited. The main deposition features of glaciers are called moraines. These long, dark bands of debris are visible on top and along the edges of glaciers. The material on the sides of the glacier are call...
Glacial Erosion and Transportation Processes
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 года назад
This video is part two of a four part series on glaciers. As glaciers move, glacial erosion processes take place causing the glacier to transport large quantities of material with them. The erosion processes of glaciers include plucking, abrasion and freeze-thaw. Abrasion can leave behind smooth polished surfaces. Sometimes these surfaces have scratches in them called striations that have been ...

A useful video for map reading on my geography examination paper ❤❤
Very useful thanks
Your a legend bud
good display 👍
such a great video! Helped me a lot to prepare for a geography exam
I would like to know the educational training of this speaker. He probably has students who do very well and everyone else fails. He has a very strange way of presenting this information. He makes a nice report of what he knows, tho.
Actually a BA majoring in Geo. FYI about 80 percent of my students pass the skills standards in the NZ system.
still helping!!
i would personally say that option c is 006

Some of the most respectable videos on you tube. No production crew like the big science channels. just a guy using all his own footage and knowledge and INCLUDING SOURCES!! 👏thank you for your time and effort
Wow, thanks! Some of these videos took ages to make as Id do it on my holidays.
thank you ! its fantastic to see real examples to supplement the textbook
Just found your channel, thankyou
Welcome!
Thankyou
That registered a solid 5.0 in the Richter scale.
This was great. I wanted to see something like this when I saw the landscape at Ninh Binh and Halong Bay in Vietnam. However, information on this topic is very spare. So thanks for making this 😊
Same here😂
Thanks. I made most of it on a holiday in Guilin, China and had to go elsewhere to get the rest of the footage. It was certainly a fun video to make.
Very good you helped with my homework 😁😁😁👍🏻👍👍👍
Most welcome 😊
😮
Sound quality is AWFUL
Good evening, I have a viable and cheap project capable of not only stopping marine erosion but also naturally recovering already degraded areas without interfering with marine dynamics or life. I need technical help to prepare the patent and publish the study. I don't need help to test the effectiveness or viability of the project, I can create and demonstrate a small-scale prototype at any time. I need help to develop a technical project and patent the concept.
5:31 why is there no steep wall, and there is a stream on the surface?
Just an optical illusion. When you are actually at that location, the hills surrounding the basin are actually steep. The place in question is called Lake Disappear in Waikato, New Zealand. teara.govt.nz/en/photograph/12409/lake-disappear#:~:text=This%20ephemeral%20lake%2C%20north%2Deast,fills%20with%20water%20(bottom).

Melbourne 2024 climate graph
this is so confusing i don't mean this in a hurtful way but you need to explain more i clicked this video confused and then i clicked off confused Edit: can you use a real map the earth one is so confusing
Honestly this was a horrible explanation
All people are from many years ago.. i hope you are all doing great❤
Yes but why not in river
I can travel through time?
wow. I can't believe that cow got so angry!
Im so glad this video exists because I ended up laughing at it lol
Really do need to explain how we find the degrees and which way do we read from the starting point. Confusing explanation for a beginner.
This is so cute! Epic vid 👍
He Mr. Gedge I carins olhox where you used to teach My name is Preston
Nice job. But, no matter what you do, it produces unintended consequences - which is what you are probably dealing with in the first place!!! Example - 40 years ago a marina was dredged. Now your beach is void of sand. Today's solution is to blame climate change!!! Remember this when dealing with water...no matter what you do to change the river, lake, pond, ocean, etc., it will balance your change somewhere, somehow. A harbor dredging here will be erosion there. A dyke to prevent flooding here will lead to enhanced flooding and erosion elsewhere.
If there are 32 lines separating 33 segments, there has to be 33 hours in a day at the equator no matter what, or else time falls behind it is contradictory
